TRUSTEE COMMITMENT
BAT is volunteer driven, with a rich history of presenting better live theater to Burien and the greater Puget Sound area. (A substantial portion of BAT’s audience comes from outside of Burien, bringing their tourist dollars into Burien. Over 80 percent of BAT’s audience eats or drinks at a restaurant before or after a performance.)
BAT has been a nonprofit corporation (with both State of Washington Nonprofit status and IRS 501(c)(3) status) since 1980. As a nonprofit, BAT is managed by its Board of Trustees.
The time commitment of a Trustee is a monthly meeting that lasts a few hours, and participating in subcommittees, with approximately the same kind of time commitment.
The key activities of a Trustee are oversight and long-term strategic planning. One of the board’s foremost responsibilities is to secure adequate resources for the organization to fulfill its mission. Here is a list of the top 10 responsibilities of a nonprofit Trustee: http://www.bridgespan.org/Publications-and-Tools/Nonprofit-Boards/Nonprofit-Boards-101/Basic-Responsibilities-Nonprofit-Boards.aspx#.V6kFUY667qE (Here is a much more detailed list of duties from a national organization: https://www.councilofnonprofits.org/tools-resources/board-roles-and-responsibilities.)
The day-to-day operations of the theater are handled by the managing director and artistic director with help from wonderful volunteers.
BAT produces four main stage productions a season, a number of smaller productions and couple of fundraising concerts a year. Plus, it is part of BAT’s mission to promote Burien, and BAT partners with local businesses to increase their exposure.
