Auditions for an 8-actor production of The Courage to Right a Woman’s Wrongs
outdoors in the parks with Burien Actors Theatre
Burien Actors Theatre (BAT) is seeking 8 actors ages 18-80 for a multiracial production of The Courage to Right a Woman’s Wrongs, by Ana Caro Mallen de Soto and adapted by Rachel Rene for performance outdoors in the parks. Like Rene’s other adaptations for BAT’s parks shows, this update will move the play from its original setting in the 17th-century Spanish Netherlands to an era and place more accessible to a modern audience.
BAT is seeking actors of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, and abilities for all roles to create a multiracial cast.
ABOUT THE SHOW
This will be a 90-minute one-act version of the play to be performed outdoors in the parks. There will be up to 9 performances between July 17 and August 16, 2026. All performances will be in South King County parks and will be weekend matinees or evenings. The parks range from concrete to grass, so the ability to maneuver over uneven ground will be important.
Leonor has been wronged by her lover. So, what’s a girl to do? Hunt the rat down and take a sword to his throat, of course! In this devilishly fun play by one of the Spanish Golden Age’s most accomplished female playwrights, Ana Caro presents a witty critique of society through the story of Leonor, a woman who sets out to find her one-time lover (Don Juan, of course) and bring him to justice.
Dressed as the dashing Leonardo, Leonor travels from Seville to Brussels, where she finds Juan and initiates her shrewd plan for revenge. What follows is a hilarious feat of masterful maneuvering, replete with cross-dressing and unexpected twists, in which she repeatedly outwits the men around her.
The Courage to Right a Woman’s Wrongs is a comedy of wild intrigue and lively ingenuity in which Leonor defies social expectations of gender in order to bring her fickle lover to justice and restore her lost honor. Don Juan may have finally met his match.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTION/REQUIREMENTS
BAT is seeking actors of all races, ethnicities, gender identities, gender expressions, and physical/mental ability.
Note that most actors will play at least two of the following roles, which may or may not match their own gender identity. Actors will be only be asked to play another gender if they are comfortable doing so.
DOÑA LEONOR/LEONARDO, female-presenting. A lady of Sevilla who comes to Brussels to avenge herself on DON JUAN, a lover who abandoned and disgraced her. She disguises herself as a man to enact her plan. Elegant, with a witty and strategic mind, and not afraid to get dirty and throw down when challenged. While this character does a little swordplay, no prior experience is needed, and there will be a fight choreographer. Shares a moment of intimacy with DON JUAN.
DON FERNANDO DE RIBERA, male-presenting. Brother to LEONOR, a gentleman who lives in Brussels. Honorable and kind, he has not seen his sister since she was a child so doesn’t recognize her in disguise. Harbors a crush on ESTELA, but doesn’t believe in his chances with her.
RIBETE, open gender. Loyal and clever servant to Leonor. Protective of her and will support her in any way possible. A naughty clown. Has a rivalry with TOMILLO over FLORA’s affections.
DON JUAN DE CÓRDOBA, male-presenting. A notorious womanizer who has the status of a gentleman. He seduced LEONOR with false promises of marriage, then fled to Brussels. He sets his sights on ESTELA, but LEONOR has other plans for him. Charismatic and fickle, and maybe not as intelligent as he imagines himself to be. While this character does a little swordplay, no prior experience is needed, and there will be a fight choreographer. Shares a moment of intimacy with LEONOR.
TOMILLO, open gender. Clever servant to DON JUAN. In it for the pay and the fun chaos of working for someone like DON JUAN. A mercenary clown. Has a rivalry with RIBETE over FLORA’s affections.
ESTELA, female-presenting. The Countess of Sora, an observant and sophisticated noblewoman. She knows she has multiple suitors and has clear opinions about each of them. Falls for LEONOR in her disguise as LEONARDO. Ultimately a romantic at heart.
LISARDA, female-presenting. ESTELA’s cousin and advisor, a wing woman who is not-so-secretly attracted to LUDOVICO.
LUDOVICO, male-presenting. The Prince of Pinoy, he pines for ESTELA despite her repeated rejections. Maybe more in love with the idea of being in love than with the person. Talks tough, but often doesn’t follow through. While this character does a little swordplay, no prior experience is needed, and there will be a fight choreographer.
FLORA, female-presenting. A clever and larcenous maid who charms both TOMILLO and RIBETE.
TIBALDO, RUFINO and ASTOLFO – bandits who try to kidnap ESTELA and LISARDA.
