More about the shows!

Young Frankenstein the Musical” by Mel Brooks

IT’S ALIVE! A wickedly inspired re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend based on Mel Brooks’ classic 1974 comedy film masterpiece, the story follows bright young Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen) as he attempts to complete his grandfather’s masterwork and bring a corpse to life. But this musical comedy hit, winner of the 2008 Outer Critics Circle Award, is not without scary and hilarious complications. Accompanied by a live musical combo, the show includes such memorable tunes as “The Transylvania Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend” and the famous “Puttin’ On The Ritz.

Beauty of the Father” by Nilo Cruz

This play by Pulitzer Prize–winner Nilo Cruz is set in Andalusia, Spain, where the restless ghost of the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca still wanders the streets conversing with the living. BEAUTY OF THE FATHER is about a young American girl who travels to this part of the world to meet her estranged father and becomes romantically involved with his Moroccan companion. We are all familiar with the love triangle but in BEAUTY OF THE FATHER, Nilo Cruz introduces an unrequited love quadrangle crossing two generations. In English.

Typically, we have done a playwrights’ festival every two years. There will be no festival this coming season. I can’t speak for what will happen in 2014-2015, since that season hasn’t been set yet, but that would be the earliest that that we would put on another.
